Motorola just revealed its new flagship line-up, the Moto Z and the more hardware rich Moto Z Force, phones designed to bring a whole new level of individualism and personalisation for the ‘Me, me, me’ millennial generation. The devices, with the help of MotoMods — modular accessories you can attach to the rear of the device using magnets, allows users to add-on functionality and capability.

All the key components in the Moto Z and Moto Z force are similar in many ways, just as the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge share the same architecture. However there are a few differences that the devices do have, namely in the camera and the battery life.

Design

Both devices use the same basic display

5.5” AMOLED 1440p Quad HD (2560 x 1440) display The Moto Z Force also has ShatterShield display

The Moto Z Force is larger than the Moto Z

155.9mm x75.8mm x 6.99mm vs 153.3mm x 75.3mm x 5.19mm It is also consequently heavier at 163g as opposed to the Moto Z which is 136g

Performance

Both the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force have the same internal architecture

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with a 2.2 GHz Quad-core CPU and an Adreno 530 GPU

4GB RAM with either 32GB or 64GB internal memory

It supports up to a 2TB micro SD card

Camera

The rear camera for the Moto Z Force is of higher resolution than that found on the Moto Z

21 MP with Phase Detection Autofocus as opposed to a 13 MP shooter

Both have the same f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilisation and laser autofocus The Moto Z Force also has phase detection autofocus which is missing on the Moto Z

The front camera is a standard 5 MP with a f/2.2 aperture.

Battery

The main reason why the Moto Z Force is larger and heavier than its little twin

3500mAh vs 2600mAh on the Moto Z

This allows the battery to have an extra 10 hours of usage and can be thus used for 40 hours as opposed to 30 hours.

Both devices have TurboPower Charging technology

The Moto Z Force can charge up to 15 hours of usage in 15 mins while the Moto Z manages 8 hours in the same time

Features

The thin and slim design of the Moto Z means that it does not support a 3.5mm headphone jack

The Moto Z and Moto Z Force has a USB Type-C adapter for the missing headphone jack

MotoMods – magnetic attachments that improve the functionality of the device

Both devices support the same MotoMods — speakers by JBL, a Moto Insta-Share projector, additional battery capacity and a personalisation backplate called Moto Style Shell.

Motorola has yet to announce the launch of an unlocked version of the devices, with the Moto Z Force being a US exclusive on Verizon for its release during summer this year. In the immortal words of Jedi Master Yoda — May the Force be with you (Verizon). For now you can register your interest for the Motorola Moto Z and Moto Z Force on Motorola’s website.
